Carbohydrates for pets - Healthy pet foods

Carbohydrates are also known as sugars and are organic substances containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen; each gram of a carbohydrate provides about four calories and they can consistently be found in tissues with energy functions.

The sources of carbohydrates and the way they are processed strongly influence their digestibility and utilization.

Carbohydrates can be classified into:

  1. Digestible (sugar and starch)
  2. Indigestible (fibre)

RICE

It is a genuine and natural food, source of starch, easily assimilable and highly digestible, and it is an excellent source of Vitamin B.
One of its main features is its elevated digestibility, which makes this food suitable for all ages, puppies and mature dogs. The absence of gluten makes it a "replaceable" product for those pets which have difficulty in digesting this protein and suffer from wheat intolerance (coeliac pets).

MAIZE

It is an excellent source of highly bioavailable complex carbohydrates, and contains a significant amount of linoleic acid, a fatty acid essential for skin health.

It is a good source of essential amino acids and good quality fibres, and it is recommended for those pets suffering from coeliac disease (gluten intolerance). Gluten is a protein contained in some cereals such as wheat, spelt, barley, rye, Kamut, oats. Instead, you can use other foods such as rice, maize, millet, manioke and others.

Recommended:
as source of high-quality carbohydrates alternative to rice.

AMARANTH

This has been a great rediscovery for a healthy and natural nutrition, because of its particularly interesting characteristics. The amaranth belongs to the Amaranthaceae family and was considered by the Atzecs and Incas  to be a sacred and basic food about 3,000 years ago.

It contains high-quality proteins, like the ones contained in milk, with a high degree of assimilation. It is extremely rich in lysine, an essential amino acid usually contained in cereals in small quantities, and it has a great bioavailability. It contains a high quantity of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and fibers that have a positive effect on digestion and metabolism.

Particularly recommended for:
those pets suffering from coeliac disease, as it is gluten-free.

TAPIOCA

This shrub (also known as Cassava) is native to South America and produces a tuber that contains a starch called Tapioca, which can be used as cereal flour. It consists of starch (93%) and some proteins, fats and fibres.

It is also used to prepare meals for children suffering from digestive problems, as it is gluten - free.

POTATOES

The nutritional characteristics of potatoes are strongly influenced by the type of preparation: being a food with a high quantity of starch it is perfectly digestible only with a proper cooking. It is a source of proteins of high biological value,  Vitamin C (a natural antioxidant which has an anti-radical action), potassium, B Group Vitamins and sodium (in a low amount).

Particularly recommended for:
allergic pets to which a gluten-free elimination diet is prescribed.
